Services

~ This Season ~ Full List ~

- detailed list of services offered-

  • lawns
    • mowing - mulching cut
    • trimming - string trimming
    • edging - edging along hard edges (sidewalk, driveway, curb, etc.)
      • lawns are trimmed high for a healthier lawn with deeper roots; the grass seed mixtures we use flourish with a 3-4" height and should be cut when they are no more than 5-6" high; the grasses are slow growing, other grasses may require more frequent cutting to maintain a desirable height
    • full or over- seeding - soil preparation, manual or hydroseeding with site-appropriate grass seed mixtures, cover of hay or seed starter mat - available mid-March through May and mid-August through September
      • daily deep watering of newly seeded lawns is required for establishing a lawn, but not offered as a service at this time
    • fertilizer - application of seasonal all-natural fertilizer - available March through May and mid-August through September; fertilizer type dependent upon a soil test
    • soil test - standard or specialized testing available
  • meadows
    • spring cleaning mowing - cuts down previous year's growth to 4"; burning is generally recommended for meadow and prairie maintenance, but on small properties with houses this is not practical; a yearly mowing improves the appearance of meadow areas, and prevents transition to a wooded area
    • meadow establishment mowing - scheduled monthly mowings to 4" for the first growing season of meadow establishment
    • meadow seeding - over-seeding manually or via hydroseeder of an existing grass/weed area with native grasses and wildflowers, blended for the needs of the site (sun-shade; wet-dry; clay-sand, etc.) and the desires of the property owner (colors, heights, certain species included or excluded, etc.) - available late-August through September, November through January, or April through May.
    • full meadow installation - soil preparation, manual or hydroseeding, and establishment mowing
  • wooded lots
    • brush cutting - cutting shrubs and undergrowth down to mulch for an entire area or to create paths through woodland/meadow property, all saplings to 2" diameter; available September through May, winter availability dependent on snow cover
    • woodland design - planning and design for healthy, natural wooded areas; layering of trees, shrubs, and undergrowth for natural effect and self-sustaining maintenance; selection of species for increasing diversity, living fences, wildlife benefit, and edible forest gardening
    • woodland establishment - implementing a woodland design in a field or meadow; plantings with seeds & saplings
    • woodland improvement - supplementing an existing woodland to achieve a specific design; plantings with seed & saplings
    • deer countermeasures - area or specimen fencing
    • lot clearing - brush and tree removal; we specialize in targeted clearing on wooded lots, minimizing the impact on the surrounding woodlands
  • trail maintenance
    • creating a trail - siting and design, supplemental woodland or meadow plantings, blazing trail, initial clearing
    • trail improvement - reshaping paths, constructing retaining walls, resurfacing trails
    • trail maintenance - string trimming, pruning, mowing, brush cutting, supplemental plantings
  • tree service
    • tree maintenance - pruning and tree removal, chipping, stump grinding
    • storm cleanup - removal of fallen trees, limbs, leaves; cutting & stacking, chipping, mulching
      • our tree services are limited to ground-based work; we recommend contacting an ISA certified arborist for full tree maintenance and technical removal services, such as those involving climbing and/or bucket trucks
  • border & foundation plantings
    • edging - single deep edging and edge trim
    • planting design - shrub and perennial selection for preference, appearance, safety, security, and water management
    • planting - installation of plants - see seed & sapling plantings section below for information about plant purchasing options
    • mulching - establishment of planting area with mulch, or topping off of existing planting
    • mulch refreshing - vacuum removal & shredding of mulch from a planting area; shredded materials can be added to your compost, redistributed to planting areas, or carried away
    • pruning - shrubs and small trees
    • weeding - maintenance of mulched beds
  • hardscaping
    • natural stone dry-stacked walls - free standing or retaining walls - installed and repaired
    • stepping stone paths - natural stone, tamped gravel base, gravel, mulch, or soil/planting fill around stones
    • stacked stone sculptures - garden accents
    • stone delivered to you or gathered on-site (depending on conditions on the property)
    • additional hardscaping services - including water features, permeable and natural stone pavers, and landscape lighting - coming soon
  • site analysis
    • free estimate on recommended maintenance services
    • in-depth analysis of property with general recommendations for maintenance and/or improvement
    • overall site design, including recommendations for hardscaping, water features, as well as plant selection and placement
  • seed & sapling plantings
    • we do not offer nursery services; we will purchase plants for you through local and mail-order nurseries depending on your needs; our favored nursery, Edge of the Woods LLC, specializes in native plants and carries an extensive selection
    • we prefer designing & planting with smaller specimens; this does not supply the instant gratification reflex, but it will be less expensive and will provide healthier, better adjusted plants in the long run
    • types of plant materials
      • seeds - we plant grasses for lawns and meadows and wildflowers by seed; depending on the specific plant, seeding time can vary from late summer through winter and into late spring
      • bareroot seedlings & saplings - bareroot plants must be planted during their dormant time, usually late Autumn to early Spring; some plants favor one season or another; in this region, we have seen the best results overall with Spring plantings; bareroots are generally small and inexpensive; they are excellent for reforesting an area
      • containerized plants - containerized or balled & burlaped plants will cost more than bareroot plants, but have a much higher success rate in our area; they are available in a much wider range of sizes, including those so large they need special dedicated equipment to plant; above a certain size, they have more trouble adapting to their new location
  • care & maintenance
    • compost setup - we highly recommend that all of our customers have a working compost bin or pile; we can help select and set up a system that will meet your needs
    • yard cleanup - leaves and other natural debris removed from lawns and other areas; shredded materials can be added to your compost, distributed to planting areas, or carried away
    • hardscape cleanup - pressure washing of decks, patios, etc.
    • gravel driveway maintenance - topping off and leveling out existing gravel drives
    • snow clearing - driveway & parking lot plowing; snow throwing
    • scheduled maintenance - discount rates & monthly payments available for regularly scheduled intervals of one or more of the maintenance services in any of the sections above
